Bike Trip 1994

24 January 1994

I went to Aldi's today. Bought two bags of potato chips and one bag of corn tortilla chips.

The power is out right now. We've had a lot of freezing rain today. Apparently that is the cause.

Two days ago, I rode to a community called Bartlett. It was unintentional. I meant to go south to Oak Brook but, instead, I went north. It was fun not knowing where I was or where I was going. It was a freeing experience. I love it.

I talked to Jeanne yesterday evening. Rod was out of town. They are going to be gone Saturday night. I was planning to go to Chicago then. I don't know, now...

Talked to Maggie last night.

Yesterday, I went back to the Oak Brook Shopping Center. When I rode back, I slipped on ice. I derailed my chain. Got on the bike and pedaled. The chained jammed. Night time. 25degrees and an ice covered bike. Took over 20 minutes to fix. I finally had to take my rear wheel off. At least my fingers warmed up from the exertion.

The last two nights, I ate at the school cafeteria. Matt fasted so I used his card (all you can eat).

Saw Lake Michigan last week with Matt. It was neat. Beautiful with all the ice floes at night.

Chicago was neat in general.

I ate a pound of yogurt today. mmm!

I have met some neat guys here. Shannon, Matt's roommate, is from Kansas. He reminds me somewhat of myself. Their room is a congregating spot for the entire floor. Shannon has a 19in TV/VCR, a top of the line Macintosh laptop w/printer, and a Yamaha Clavinova. Everyone comes in to use them. One guy keeps his Nintendo in here and several people leave their games. So someone is in here using something almost every moment.

Jay and Guy are from CA. Matt thinks that Guy is the best looking man he has ever seen. Todd, the RA, loves Lacrosse. There are many more. I met a few people outside of the T-6 group. Cody, a senior, and his friends. And Nathan, a friend of a few of the T-6ers.

It is snowing again here. Matt has never seen it snow so much.

Two nights out of the week are picked by the RA where the floor is designated as 'Open'. That means that girls are allowed up for a 2 hour window of time. The day of the week varies and each floor chooses different nights. Those are the nights where Leslie and her friends visit.

I went to Evanston today. Spent seven hours outside. It is kind of breathtaking to ride through downtown Chicago and then get to Lake Michigan. I see the flat expanse of chopped up, wavy ice and snow; and off in the distance, the blue of the water tantalizes as the waves catch the sun.

There are many things that I like about Chicago; but generally I don't care much for it. I think, most things considered, it is an ugly city. I do like the overhead train track system. I think the Lincoln Park Zoo is neat.

I am sitting in my sleeping bag at Uncle Rod's place as I write... They have a 9 month old kitten here which keeps attacking my toes as they wiggle. She looks somewhat like a long-haired Sunbeam. She is declawed, at least, as she swipes at me.

I do love the cold winter. It is just a matter of dressing properly. Unfortunately, I am on the edge in that respect.

1 February 1994

Grandma and Grandpa called just a half hour or so after my mum. They want me to stay for a long time and help at the store rearranging. I'd be perfectly happy to do so but I have a deadline. I will probably spend Friday with them.

I've enjoyed spending time with the Joslins. I finally made Rod laugh last night. I played Legos with Ben. Sisi and I read a push-a-button-makes-a-sound book. I had to watch TV with Ben. Talk about a full day.

I bought an insulated coat with a polartec lined hood. Only $50 and I have a feeling I will need it.

Once I leave, I will miss Kristyna's Dutch.

I plan to sleep in Earlville or Mendota. (maybe Somonauk). I will follow country roads north of "34".

I saw the polar bear at the zoo. It was swimming around happily in the cold...
