Bike Trip 1994

11 January 1994

Shannon got the Samsung.

I rode around in the snow and practiced trials-type riding in the parking lot of some nearby business.

Ate breakfast at Shoney's (the all-you-can-eat breakfast bar) where the Hartmans and I went on Sunday.

I went to the public library. Looked at caving books and wrote in my journal.

Tonight we saw Hot Shots part Deux. (I saw Rambo again this afternoon.)

I rode partway down the Prairie Path. Then I went looking for the Town Square Shopping Center. Its on Naperville Road which crosses Roosevelt. I turned the wrong way (right instead of left) and rode to the outskirts of town before turning back. I kind of suspected that I was wrong.

Took pictures of a large flock of Canada Geese that were in a field at the edge of town. Rode back. Found Naperville Road. Went to the shopping center and Barnes & Noble. Looked at magazines and books. Bought an Illinois road map with county roads in it. Dropped in on Banana Republic. Nice sale there. Definitely a favourite. I ate lunch at Subway. Had 2 footlong Veggie subs.

Got to bed at 1:00.

Showered. Left around noonish. Went to Town Square again. Got a bag of potato chips and a bag of corn chip curls. Went to the Nature Store and clothing stores. Went back to Banana Republic and bought two shirts. Wish I had money for a winter coat there. I suspect that my current wool and leather jacket isnt going to be sufficient for my trip. Went to Barnes & Noble and read some books (including a book about Kung Fu and David Carradine).

Tonight we watched Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Matt went to the floor Bible study. Leslie and her friends came up (including Jenny).

Harts says that he wants to take me to Chicago this weekend.

-35degrees with wind chill. I wish I had that Banana Republic coat. Went to Jewel and bought two bags of potato chips, 3 apples, and a loaf of bread. Went back to the warm dorm. Watched TV. Rewatched Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. At quarter to 6 the fire alarm went off after Matt went to dinner with Leslie. Very cold outside while we waited for the OK to go back in. I got a package from mum (SASE envelopes and fruit leather).

I went to the Blanchard Road Alliance Church with Harts and Leslie. Sermon on leaving a spiritual legacy.

The sunday school class was on contentment in all things. What is contentment? A peace and joy that comes from from within and not reliant upon external conditions. The Greek word that Paul uses means, literally, self-sufficient.

Went to Jewel. Bought two bags of potato chips, bag of pretzels, and four oranges.

Watched The Sting and The Three Fugitives.

Holiday.

Went to Oak Brook Mall with Shannon, Mike, Randy and Jay.

I want to go back to see what I missed. So much there. So little time.

We went to MC Sporting Goods. Saw Manzella gloves. Might have to get them while on sale. Shannon bought The Untouchables video and rented Apocalypse Now. Watched the latter one tonight.

Went to Jewel. Bought three apples, four oranges and a bag of carrots.

Watched Chariots of Fire.

Went to the public library. Looked at comedy and movie books. Back issues of Backpacker Magazine.

Went to Barnes & Noble. Looked at travel books.

Bought tortilla chips, corn chips, and pretzels at Aldi's.

Very cold. Last night it was supposedly -70degrees with the wind chill. My nose hurts. It looks sunburned. I dont know if the cold/wind has anything to do with it. Might be snow reflection. It was very sunny today.

Wheaton is great. I am continually impressed about how friendly and accepting the guys are here. Several times various guys offered a couch or even a bed to sleep on. Several have expressed an interest in me and my life. I enjoy being with them and I think the feeling is mutual. I am beginning to run out of things to do here in Wheaton proper. (I'm beginning to think about improper things to do.) The arctic weather has limited even MY desire to ride outside. After riding in -20degrees for 15 minutes one day, I got a sunburn on my nose. (I think - it could be frostbite, but I doubt it.) I like the public library here better than Springfield's. Going to Chicago Saturday with Matt by train!! Last week it was canceled because of the cold.
